February

1. Festive month - CNY, Red Packets, moolah, pineapple tarts, abalone, reunion dinner, blackjack, steamboats (x10000), house visiting, gong xi fa cai, happy new year.
You get the drift - It's CNY and I am happy.

2. COC is over and I'm happy.

3. February is ending and I'm happy.

5. Won and lost money in blackjack but I'm still happy.

I'm going to be at Wavehouse, Sentosa this Saturday from 4pm to 10pm (Flea & Splash). Come on down if you are free! You can also visit Resorts World@Sentosa.

March
2. American Idol
3. GG Season 3 resumes.
4. Field Camp (if activated, sigh.)
5. Cohesion
6. One Monday off (15 Mar)
7. Say HELLO IT FAIR (11-14 Mar). MacBook PRO - say HELLO to your new owner.
8. iPhone turns 4 months old.

You know I am supposed to study for a test tomorrow but it is really boring (esp. Disciplinary related stuff). I was supposed to blog about a very thought-provoking topic. I didnt and now i just lost it. I cant start and the inspiration is just not there anymore. All these aren't excuses.

Happy New Year!

2 crashes in a day
clarence
[info]clarencechen

I planned to publish an entry but it looks like it will not be happening anytime soon.

Fortunately, my iPhone has a livejournal application which allow me to pen down my random and irrational thoughts.

My 2 months old ASUS netbook just crashed on me with no apparent signs. Like one isn't enough, there are two. My Toshiba laptop decided to go on strike and I'm disconnected from the virtual world now.

Till both my laptops recover, I will post a thought-provoking and tear inducing entry.

Comment: Racial Discrimination
clarence
[info]clarencechen
Headline: Indian man set on fire in latest Australia attackwww.channelnewsasia.com/stories/afp_asiapacific/view/1029578/1/.html
Please click on the link to read the disturbing article.

This is still happening in a country filled with foreigners - be it students or expats. I'm not a person who insist or practice racial equality because I know it is impossible to achieve this. We are born differently for a reason. Skin colour is often a very sensitive topic till today after years and years of unnecessary massacre due to race and religion. If only we could omit religion, the world will be a much better place. I'm digressing a little but I still want to prove my point here. Look at all the wars that are happening around the world - it's all linked to a strong belief or disbelief in a particular religion.

I'm not at all a religious person but having spoken to several of my friends who stick by their religious belief, it is heartening to see that there isn't a single religion that encourages the use of violence to solve problems. I've no idea why and what the terrorists are thinking but that is for another day as it is extremely complex.

Back to the headline news.

Yet another indian had been attacked in Melbourne again. If you have been following the recent spate of events, you'll find that the Australian authorities are issuing the same statement over and over again (i.e. Isolated incident and not racially motivated.) How on earth can you have the brain and heart to say that it isn't racially motivated when time and time again, the attacks are always targeted at the Indians? There is a significant population of Chinese, Vietnamese, Myanmese, Koreans and etc. working and studying in Melbourne but why the Indians? The attacks on the Vietnamese is already on the decline but certainly not the Indians.

It is really saddening to read such news especially when those who were killed were students studying in Melbourne. The worst part is when they are the only child and their parents had to borrow a huge sum of money in order to allow their child to study here only to get killed and are in debt. Who can help? It's really unfortunate and I doubt the insurance payout is enough to pay off their debts. Even so, their only child is gone forever in a foreign land.

The news agencies might have exaggerated these cases as it doesn't seem to be a big issue to my friends who are in Australia. It will be interesting to see what will happen next especially when Indian students applying for Australian student visas have already dropped by 46%. A significant percentage there.

Did you hear about the Morgans?

Caught the latest movie on the opening weekend at Cine with branch mates.
I knew the ratings were bad but I wanted to watch a comedy and just laugh.
Overall, it wasn't THAT bad to receive a rating of 1 star but 2 stars is the max for this movie.
I would have expected more from this movie.

Looking forward to American Idol without Paula Abdul!

Shattered
clarence
[info]clarencechen

In a way, I need a change
From this burnout scene
Another time, another town
Another everything
But it’s always back to you

Stumble out, in the night
From the pouring rain
Made the block, sat and thought
There’s more I need
It’s always back to you

But I’m good without ya
Yeah, I’m good without you
Yeah, yeah, yeah

How many times can I break till I shatter?
Over the line can’t define what I’m after
I always turn the car around
Give me a break let me make my own pattern
All that it takes is some time but I’m shattered
I always turn the car around

I had no idea that the night
Would take so damn long
Took it out, on the street
While the rain still falls
Push me back to you

But I’m good without ya
Yeah, I’m good without you
Yeah, yeah, yeah

How many times can I break till I shatter?
Over the line can’t define what I’m after
I always turn the car around
Give me a break let me make my own pattern
All that it takes is some time but I’m shattered
I always turn the car around

Oohhh…
Give it up, give it up, baby
Give it up, give it up, now
Now…

How many times can I break till I shatter?
Over the line can’t define what I’m after
I always turn the car around
All that I feel is the realness I’m faking
Taking my time but it’s time that I’m wasting
Always turn the car around

How many times can I break till I shatter?
Over the line can’t define what I’m after
I always turn the car around

Don’t wanna turn that car around
I gotta turn this thing around

2009 : A rewind
clarence
[info]clarencechen

2009 had been a relatively dreadful year. I am writing this post to look back at 2009 on myself and whatever that I can cover in general.

Travel

Something that I've always like to do. It’s a source of motivation for me to save up.

I've re-visited KL using AirAsia for the first time in the first quarter of the year.

I saw a demonstration on the streets in KL which I was really excited about because this isn’t something that you can witness in Singapore, ever and hopefully, never.

The last quarter of the year was spent in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Hong Kong was for leisure with my family and it was really nice getting to eat good and cheap food in Shenzhen as well. This trip was joined by my uncle and my toddler cousins who made it even more enjoyable.

Taiwan wasn’t a leisure trip – (it was for army) but nonetheless, it was still fun.

The weather was literally cool, the people were nice and the company was right.

Taipei is certainly a city worth visiting and exploring.

I might just re-visit this charming city yet again!

2010 - I'll definitely be in Melbourne for the second half of the year but I definitely hope that I can travel to at least one new city before heading for studies.

LATEST: I’ll be heading for Bali in April. So I’ve got my wish fulfilled.

My 21st @ Somerset Grand

Thank you for all who turned up showering me with lavish gifts.

Thank you so much.

I really appreciate your presence and to a lesser extent, your gifts. Haha.

National Service

2009 was the year I got posted to 6SIR as a RFN.

Apprehension at first but it was all for nothing.

Went through AIT and POI training.

Went for my first deployment before I was given a temp down-PES.

Posted to HQ/S1 Branch and is currently there.

Busy but pretty fun to be in.

2010 – ORD year. Enough said.

Media and Entertainment

A year with great hits – think I Gotta Feeling, Poker Face, Halo and Fireflies!

A year with great artistes – think Lady Gaga, Owl City and David Guetta.

A year with not-so-good local tv dramas – think The Ultimatum.

A year with commendable movies – think Avatar, Sherlock Holmes and Transformers.

A year with a transformation shopping experience – think ION, 313@Somerset and Illuma.

A year with FANTASTIC concerts – think F1 rocks and Jason Mraz

The year we bid goodbye to Michael Jackson and Brittany Murphy.
The year where MediaCorp lost Fiona Xie, Huang Biren and Ivy Lee.

2010 – Definitely more exciting with Marina Bay Sands and Singapore’s FIRST theme park at Resorts World Sentosa.

Economy and Current Affairs

2009 was just like a repeat of 1997.

I don’t like it but this just explains that life is always full of ups and downs.

Without 2009, people will not appreciate and embrace 2010.

Keywords that dominated the headlines of 2009 – Terrorism, H1N1, Retrenchment, China, Banks, Pay Cuts, Negative GDP, Recession and failed Copenhagen Climate Change talks.

Keywords that will dominate headlines of 2010 – Terrorism, H1N1, Positive GDP, Pay restore, Youth Olympics, World Cup

2010 is extremely significant because it is a new year and the start of a new decade. There are so many things worth looking back at 2009 and learning from it but it is impossible to cover it in an entry.

1 Jan 2010 – My sister got engaged and I can hear the wedding bells. Congratulations and my best wishes from the bottom of my heart.

2010 will be the decade of my life, my prime and I will definitely treasure it.

2010 Resolutions
clarence
[info]clarencechen
I've never come up with any new year resolutions. Here goes what I want to achieve and will achieve in 2010!

1. Take up a third language - preferably retake French or take up Spanish.
2. Drive more often (at least twice per week)
3. Disrupt for studies in peace
4. Minimum B grade in University
5. Complete my Roaccutane treatment
6. Read more!
7. Watch less TV dramas (Limit to HIMYM, Fringe and GG) - That's already 2.5 hours per week, mind you. Fortunately I've stopped watching HK TVB dramas.
8. A good and comfy house in Melbourne
9. Join a sports CCA in uni (so that i'll be motivated to exercise)
10. Save more, spend less
11. Work part-time in Australia so that I have more to spend (How contradicting!)
12. Sleep 8 hours daily.
13. Stay happy always 24/7.
14. Celebrate 22nd birthday in Singapore
15. Adapt to university life in a week

That's all. Looking forward to achieve everything by Sep 2010.
In the meantime, i'm awaiting for the new year.

Hello 2010, waves frantically at 2009!
(a look back post coming soon!)

of the super long weekend.

[info]clarencechen
Merry Christmas, Boxing Day and up next, 2010!

I will write a post to sum up the year and my resolutions for the new year.
I've never believed in setting resolutions and never set resolutions for the past 20 years of my life.
Since I am 21, I should be wiser and set resolutions so that I will have something to look back come 2011.

Since the last update, I've...
1. Gotten an iPhone
2. finally watch New Moon and Sherlock Holmes
3. ushered in Christmas at a cosy gathering

iPhone is (almost) great. It's just that the battery life is really disappointing. That said, there are so many raving reviews about the iPhone so I'll just leave it at that.

New Moon is indeed bad. I like Alice. Haha. Why doesn't anybody give her the attention that she should receive? Her character and personality is so likeable in the book but seems kinda bland in movie. Team Alice for me.

Sherlock Holmes is surprisingly good! The setting is nice, storyline is pretty good and the cast is certainly worth watching.

Christmas eve was also spent watching movies and rushing to buy last minute exchange present. When I mention last minute, it was really last minute. I was still out hunting for a christmas exchange present at 7pm before heading to Cindy's place. Haha.

I'm going to burn some carbs now. Looking forward to the next long weekend!

Hong Kong vs Taiwan
clarence
[info]clarencechen
Ignore the title because I can't think of a better one.
It'll be unfair to the two cities if I were to compare them because both are equally great!

Hong Kong (041109 - 101109)

It was a good trip with my family and uncle's family.
I think I have serious short term memory.
Highlights of the trip:
1. Ocean Park (I didn't go when I went last year)

2. HK Island (Causeway Bay, Wan Chai and etc)
3. Kowloon Island (Mongkok, TST and etc)

Getting cheap clothes from Zara and H&M.

I think I will add more information as and when I remember.

Taiwan (281109 to 131209)

It was my first trip to Taipei, Taiwan and I had a hell of a good time there.
The company was fantastic (Thank you Gibson, Lewis and Mark).
You guys are such great travel mates cum colleagues.
These two weeks in Taiwan can easily rank the best times I had this year.
It was relaxing, exciting and enjoyable.
I will definitely miss the night chatting sessions in the cool weather with relaxing music playing in the background and topped it up with delicious instant noodles with generous servings of meat plus a cheap canned drink.
Ahhh... The thought of it not happening again is kinda depressing.
Oh well.

R&R was definitely time well-spent but it was disgustingly short.
It's such an insult to Taipei giving us only 1 day to explore the entire Taipei City.
The people are really nice and polite.
There isn't any communication breakdown (think HK).
The weather is so good.
I never perspire for two weeks.

We only had time for 3 rides at Leofoo Safari Park which was really a downer. On the brighter side, I managed to conquer the most thrilling ride in the theme park which was extremely exhilarating.

We didn't have enough time to comb Dan Shui and truly enjoy the riverside because the time given was too short! 1 hour was all the time that we had over there.

Ximending, Shilin Night Market, Raohe Night Market and Taipei 101 are indeed very local and distinctive.

It would have been better if the shops could open earlier and close later just for us.

Nevertheless, I heart Taiwan!

lovin' it
clarence
[info]clarencechen
Hello people!

1. I will be flying off to Hong Kong tomorrow and will be back next Tues!
2. I just visited HK about 2 years ago and I'm looking forward to go back again.
3. H&M is the No.1 clothes label that I will definitely get something from. Awesome-ness.
4. I'll be crossing over to Shenzhen too. My uncle promises cheap but good food!
5. I can't wait to sit on the retro trams in Hong Kong Island. Slow but absolutely vintage.
6. I can't wait to sit on all the thrilling rides in Ocean Park.
7. I have never seen a panda in real life and I am going to do so.
8. November will be a busy month yet again.

It feels good to be on leave for one week!
I can't wait for the festive season yet again.

And on 14th Nov, I will finally decide on the Uni with a confirmed place (hopefully).

Life is getting better.
